Template phrases for communication – 1

A phrase is a word group used frequently in speech, the meaning of the word in a phrase is completely different from the meaning when the same word is used separately, for example: Take your seat means, sit on the chair and not holding the chair up. Natives use phrases more frequently in speech than in writing, this makes the speech sound natural. Phrases are used without thinking, for example: when you see your friend immediately, you wish him/her good morning or hi how are you, without thinking. If you can remember 1000 phrases you can communicate effortlessly in any situation. Phrases do not follow any grammatical structure and sometimes they might sound illogical or nonsensical. Idioms and idiomatic expressions ( e.g. waste not want not) belong to the Phrase category. Today let’s see some important phrases and their functions.

When asking for information you can use the following template phrases

Can you tell me + how much is this?/ where is the post office street/where can I find a store?

Could you tell me...? (you can use could in place of can it’s a more polite way of asking for information)

I‘d like to know + the direction of Rail station/How much should I pay +?

Have you ( or Got) any idea...? Have you any idea about a good movie in town?/ Have you got an idea about this new machine?

Practical Grammar 1 – Idea of a subject in a sentence

The person or thing (Physical and Virtual) we speak about is called a subject. Generally, the subject comes first in a sentence.

Bill is a student.

The plane arrived late.

The old building is a museum.

These four books are mine.

The climate of Alaska is icy.

The president of India is coming today.

The Chinese team played well.

Students are busy.

Jim and Shane came late to the class

NOTE: A subject can be a noun, a common noun, a proper noun, an abstract noun, a collective noun, an adjective, an adverb, etc.

  1. In an imperative sentence the subject is left out e.g. Sit quietly, we don’t say ‘You sit quietly.’
  2. Some sentences start with dummy subjects like ‘it’, ‘there’ etc. e.g. There is some coffee in the kettle, It is very important to be an honest person.

In a sentence the subject is followed by a verb (A verb is an important word in a sentence) wrong choice of a verb in a sentence would make the sentence awful.

She is a teacher  (She = subject, is = verb)

They are my friends (They = subject , are = verb)

Mary works for a Bank (Mary = subject, works = verb)

Choosing an appropriate verb for a subject in a sentence is quite a challenging task till you are familiar with the conversion of a subject into its pronoun form (Mentally). This is called subject-verb agreement. The following illustration would help you to convert any subject into its pronoun form.

It’s a big week.  Nvidia kicked off its annual developers meeting this afternoon.  We have the Bank of Japan tonight.  And the Fed determines policy on Wednesday. As we discussed last week, there has been a clear effort by the Bank of Japan (BOJ) over the past several months to start setting expectations in markets that they will exit emergency-level policies.  Last week, there was talk that they might end negative interest rates tonight.  Today, Nikkei Asia (a Japanese news source) suggested they will also end yield curve control and ETF purchases. While they would continue with QE, this would be an aggressive exit from a very long period of ultra-easy monetary policy.

In Plain English by ChatGpt

This week is packed with significant events in the financial world. Nvidia has just begun its annual developers meeting. Tonight, the Bank of Japan (BOJ) is holding a crucial session, and on Wednesday, the Federal Reserve will determine its policy.

Regarding the Bank of Japan, there’s been a noticeable effort over the past few months to prepare markets for a shift away from emergency-level policies. Last week, there was speculation that they might put an end to negative interest rates during this session. Today, Nikkei Asia, a Japanese news source, hinted that the BOJ might also cease yield curve control and ETF purchases. Although they would continue with quantitative easing (QE), this move would mark a significant departure from an extended period of very loose monetary policy.

Business Vocabulary (Strategic Phrases) in context – by ChatGpt:

Nvidia Corporation, often simply referred to as Nvidia, is an American technology company known primarily for designing and manufacturing graphics processing units (GPUs)

“Preparing markets for a shift away from emergency-level policies” refers to the actions taken by central banks, such as the Bank of Japan, to signal to investors and financial markets that they are planning to move away from the exceptionally loose monetary policies implemented during times of economic crisis or emergency.

The goal of preparing markets for this shift is to avoid sudden and disruptive market reactions and to provide investors with clarity and guidance on the future direction of monetary policy.

Yield curve control is a monetary policy tool used by central banks to influence longer-term interest rates by targeting specific yields on government bonds across different maturities.

ETF (Exchange-Traded Fund) is a type of investment fund that holds assets like stocks, commodities, or bonds. ETFs are traded on stock exchanges, similar to individual stocks. Bank of Japan, is engaging in ETF purchases, it means they are buying ETFs as part of their monetary policy operations. Central banks may purchase ETFs as a way to inject liquidity into financial markets, support asset prices, or achieve specific policy objectives.

Quantitative Easing (QE) is a monetary policy tool used by central banks to stimulate the economy when traditional monetary policy measures, like lowering interest rates, have become ineffective. Here’s how it generally works:
